Research published in the journal “Nature” identified that dogs carry 10 diet-related genes that wolves simply don’t have. These include multiple copies of the AMY2B gene, which produces amylase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down starch. Wolves carry just two copies. This genetic adaptation is a direct response to millennia of living alongside humans and sharing our plant-rich diets.

In plain terms: dogs evolved to digest carbohydrates and plant matter. They are biologically omnivores, capable of deriving nutrition from both animal and plant sources. As veterinarian Dr. Annika Linde, co-author of a landmark 2024 PLOS ONE study, put it:

The 2024 PLOS ONE Study: 3,000 Health Parameters Over 12 Months

This is the gold standard study for this topic. Published in the respected scientific journal PLOS ONE in April 2024, researchers followed 15 dogs over a full year, measuring more than 3,000 individual health parameters while the dogs were fed V-Dog, a commercially available plant-based kibble.

The result? The dogs thrived. There were no significant negative health changes detected across the year-long trial. The study has since been adapted into a Netflix documentary and has become one of the most widely cited pieces of evidence supporting plant-based diets for dogs.

University of Illinois Study: Digestibility and Nutrition

Researchers at the University of Illinois tested two human-grade, lightly cooked vegan dog foods and found that plant-based protein digestibility was comparable to leading meat-based pet foods, and that plant-based fat absorption was actually higher. Dogs in the study also demonstrated improved gut microbiome diversity, beneficial changes in fecal metabolites, and weight maintenance or loss.

Dr. Andrew Knight’s Population Studies (Multiple Years)

UK veterinarian Dr. Andrew Knight has authored or co-authored several of the most important studies in this space. Analyzing data from thousands of dogs, he concluded that nutritionally complete plant-based diets are among the healthiest dietary choices for dogs, outperforming both conventional meat-based diets and raw meat diets in health outcomes.

His 2022 study, published in PLOS ONE, examined guardian-reported health indicators across 2,536 dogs and found that dogs on plant-based diets showed fewer signs of poor health, required fewer vet visits, and were less reliant on medications.

Vienna Veterinary University (2014): No Nutritional Deficiencies

Researcher Semp began this study with a hypothesis: that dogs on a vegan diet would show deficiencies in iron and B12. Her findings completely contradicted her prediction. Dogs on a complete plant-based diet showed no significant deviations from dogs on conventional meat-based diets, leading her to conclude that plant-based diets can assure a healthy lifestyle in dogs.

What the British Veterinary Association Said in 2024

In July 2024 the British Veterinary Association published a policy position on diet choices for cats and dogs. It states plainly that it is possible to feed dogs a plant-based diet, while cautioning that owners should be aware of the difficulty of balancing these diets, the lack of robust long-term safety data, and the need to monitor their dog’s health over time. Coming from a major veterinary body, that acknowledgment matters. It is not an endorsement, and the BVA notes that much of the supporting research is small-scale and owner-reported.

What About the DCM Scare? Here’s the Truth

If you’ve spent any time researching plant-based dog food, you’ve probably encountered alarming headlines about dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious heart condition, being linked to non-meat diets. Let’s unpack this carefully, because the reality is more nuanced than the headlines suggest.

What Actually Happened

In 2018, the FDA began investigating a spike in DCM cases in dogs. The foods associated with these cases were overwhelmingly grain-free diets, not plant-based diets. Specifically, more than 90% of the implicated foods were grain-free, and 93% contained high amounts of peas or lentils as primary ingredients.

Critically: this is grain-free food with high legume content. This is not the same as a nutritionally complete plant-based diet formulated by veterinary nutritionists.

The FDA’s Own Conclusion

In December 2022, the FDA announced it would not provide further updates on the DCM investigation because no causal link between any specific dietary pattern and DCM had been established. The agency described DCM as “a complex medical condition that may be affected by multiple factors such as genetics, underlying medical conditions, and diet.”

In other words: the science did not prove grain-free or legume-rich diets cause DCM. Correlation was observed in some populations, causation was not established.

Later evidence points the same way. An 18-month randomized, double-blind trial of 60 dogs published in the Journal of Animal Science in 2025 compared grain-free diets with peas, grain-inclusive diets with peas, and grain-free diets without peas. It found no clinically significant changes in cardiac function in any group, and taurine levels stayed normal throughout.

The Important Nuance

To be responsible, it’s worth noting that some ongoing research still finds associations between high-pulse diets and certain cardiac markers in specific breeds, particularly Golden Retrievers, Irish Wolfhounds, and some other large breeds. If you have one of these breeds, it’s worth discussing with your vet and choosing a plant-based food that has been AAFCO-tested through feeding trials (not just nutrient analysis).

Bottom Line on DCM:

The DCM scare was primarily about grain-free, legume-heavy conventional foods — not properly formulated, AAFCO-certified plant-based diets. No causal link was ever established. That said, always choose a complete and balanced food with feeding trial certification, and consult your vet if you have a breed with known cardiac predispositions.

Protein & Essential Amino Acids: Dogs need 10 essential amino acids. Plant-based sources like pea protein, soy, and lentils can provide these when properly combined and formulated. Look for foods that meet AAFCO minimum protein requirements.

Taurine: While dogs can synthesize taurine from other amino acids, some breeds have reduced efficiency. Quality plant-based foods supplement taurine directly. This is especially important for breeds with known predispositions (Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels).

Vitamin B12: Not naturally found in plants but easily added as a supplement. All reputable plant-based dog foods include synthetic B12.

    Do the diets associated with cases of non-hereditary DCM appear to have any commonalities?

    Most of the diets associated with the reports of non-hereditary DCM have legume seed ingredients, also called “pulses” (e.g., peas, lentils, etc.), high in their ingredient lists (although soy is a legume, we did not see a signal associated with this ingredient). These include both “grain-free” and grain-containing formulations. Legumes, including pulse ingredients, have been used in pet foods for many years, with no evidence to indicate they are inherently dangerous, but analysis of data reported to CVM indicates that pulse ingredients are used in many “grain-free” diets in greater proportion than in most grain-containing formulas. FDA has asked pet food manufacturers to provide diet formulations so we can further understand the proportions of ingredients in commercially-available diets and possible relationships with non-hereditary DCM.

    The FDA does not know the specific connection between these diets and cases of non-hereditary DCM and is continuing to explore the role of genetics, underlying medical conditions, and/or other factors.
